Types of Diamond Cut

The modern brilliant cut (the most widely used cut in the world) was invented in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky. This diamond cut calls for 57 or 58 facets, each of which is applied to cover a precise surface at a particular angle.

DIAMOND CUT:

How a diamond has been cut, polished and to what proportions, are extremely important because these factors determine the life, brilliance and luster of your diamond. The brilliant or round cut is the most popular, but other cuts such as those illustrated below are also highly prized. The cut applies to the shape of the diamond as well as the width of the table, the girdle, the depth of the crown. All are factors in the reflection of light and can make a diamond clear and brilliant or appear cloudy if the diamond is not cut well.

The cutting style of a diamond can be brilliant or step cut, single or full cut. Brilliant cut can be modern brilliant, old mine cut, rose cut or European cut. It is illustrated by triangular facets that radiate outward around the stone. A brilliant single cut is usually used for smaller diamonds, and a full traditional round brilliant cut for larger diamonds

The step cut has facets which are usually four sided, appearing as steps moving away from the center of the stone. The shape of the diamond is important as well, reflecting the individual personality of the one who wears it. A recent survey indicated the round cut reflects a personality that is dependable, easy going, home and family centered. An Oval cut reflects an individual personality, creative, well organized and a risk taker. The heart shape reflects a sentimental, sensitive and creative soul. The Emerald, Princess, Radiant or square shape reflects a person who is honest, open, efficient, conservative and organized. Pear shape reflects a considerate home-centered individual, and the marquise shape reflects an extroverted, exciting, experimental and innovative personality. Personal preference, however, is the most important determining factor for shape.
